What to Know Before Buying a Lab-Grown Diamond in New Zealand


A diamond is one of the few things you buy once and then wear for the rest of your life. It earns the right to be understood before it is chosen. So begin with the question most people hesitate to ask aloud. Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?

 

It is. A lab-grown diamond has the same carbon crystal structure as a mined one, the same hardness, and it moves light in the same way. What changes is origin. A lab-grown diamond forms inside a controlled chamber over a number of weeks, beginning with a fragment of diamond called a seed.

What is a lab-grown diamond?


A lab-grown diamond is carbon, held in the tight cubic lattice that makes a diamond a diamond rather than graphite. That structure is the source of the hardness, and it is why a diamond returns light the way almost nothing else does.

 

Every one starts as a seed, a sliver of existing diamond placed inside a chamber. Carbon gathers onto that seed layer by layer until a rough crystal forms, large enough to be cut. What the earth takes a billion years to do happens here across a few weeks.

 

From that point, the process is identical. The rough is cut and polished by the same hands that shape mined stones, then graded by the same laboratories against the same scales.

 

Lab-grown diamonds are not reserved for only engagement rings. The same stones sit in diamond stud earrings worn on ordinary mornings, and in diamond bracelets that mark nothing at all. The material does not change according to the occasion.

What are lab-grown diamonds called?


The names multiply, and not all of them are neutral. Lab-grown, lab-created, man-made, cultured, engineered. Each describes the same stone. The two names you will meet on paperwork are CVD and HPHT. Both name the method used to grow the diamond.

 

Synthetic diamonds are the ones to watch. The name carries a suggestion of imitation, though it was once simply the technical term. GIA moved away from it in 2019 for exactly that reason.

 

Anyone in New Zealand searching for lab-created diamonds is looking at the same material as someone searching for lab-grown. The language has not settled. The stone has.

 

How are lab-grown diamonds made?


Almost every lab-grown diamond sold today comes from one of two methods. Both begin with the seed, and both end with a rough crystal ready for the cutter. What differs is the conditions built around the seed in between.

 

HPHT, or high pressure high temperature, recreates the conditions that make diamonds underground. The seed sits in carbon, and a press applies force and heat far beyond anything on the surface until the carbon melts and settles onto the seed as a crystal. It is the older method, and the more literal one, since it copies the earth rather than sidestepping it.

 

CVD, or chemical vapour deposition, works by a quieter route. The seed rests in a sealed chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. Heat breaks the gas apart, and carbon rains onto the seed and builds upward in layers. The result grows as a flat tablet rather than a rough lump.

A lab-grown diamond is a diamond by every measure a gemmologist uses. Same composition, same crystal structure, same refractive index, same place at the top of the hardness scale.

 

Underneath that question is usually a more specific one. Will it last?

 

It will. A diamond does not fade, cloud or soften with age, and a lab-grown one behaves no differently. Nothing you meet in daily life is hard enough to scratch it. What it will collect is the film any worn stone collects, from hand cream, soap and skin. That reads as lost sparkle and is nothing of the kind. A clean brings it back.

 

Diamond simulants are a separate matter. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are made to resemble diamonds without being them, and they are softer and behave differently in light. A lab-grown diamond is not a simulant. The distinction matters, because a stone described only as lab-created may be either.

 

How do lab-grown and natural diamonds compare?

The 4Cs apply to both without adjustment. Cut, colour, clarity and carat are assessed against the same scales by the same laboratories, and a grade means what it has always meant regardless of where the stone formed.

 

So the comparison is narrower than most people expect. It comes down to origin, to what a certificate records, and to what each stone is likely to be worth in years to come.

Neither column is the better one. A natural diamond carries an origin that cannot be manufactured, and for some people that is the point. A lab-grown diamond carries none of that geological weight and offers scale and clarity in its place. What are the downsides of lab-grown diamonds?

They are unlikely to hold their value

Lab-grown diamonds have fallen in price as growing capacity has expanded, and there is little reason to expect that to reverse. A lab-grown diamond bought today will probably not hold its value the way a natural stone of the same grade would. If you are buying something to wear for decades, that is close to irrelevant, since you will not be selling it. If you are thinking of a diamond as an asset, buy natural and accept the smaller stone.

 

Origin genuinely matters to some people

Some people want a diamond that came out of the ground. Not because they misunderstand the science, but because origin means something to them, and a stone that formed over a billion years carries a weight a chamber cannot reproduce. That is a legitimate reason to choose natural, and nobody should be talked out of it.

Grading is less consistent than buyers assume

Laboratories vary in how strictly they apply the scales, and two stones carrying the same paper grade can look meaningfully different beside each other. Which laboratory issued the certificate matters more with lab-grown diamonds than with natural ones, which is why the certification section below is worth reading properly.

 

Some jewellers have a reason to steer you away

Occasionally that reflects genuine conviction; more often it reflects margin, and stock bought at yesterday's prices that becomes harder to move as prices fall. Worth knowing when you are being advised.

Which certification should you look for?

For lab-grown diamonds, look for IGI. The International Gemological Institute grades most lab-grown stones in the market. For natural diamonds, look for GIA, which set the 4Cs originally and remains the reference point for mined stones.

 

The split is convention rather than rule. GIA does grade lab-grown diamonds, and has done for years, but following the market convention means your certificate is the kind a jeweller or valuer recognises immediately.
